Crescenciano Alva Mendoza was born in Bridgeport, Texas. He was the son of Crescenciano Perales Mendoza and Virginia Torres Alva. He was also known as Charlie or Chano. He was brother to Emily, Charlotte, Angie, Hortense, Benjamin, Carlos, Fred, David, Leo, Danny, Willie and Tony.

His first wife was Aurora Chillura in Tampa, Florida. They had a son, Daniel.

He and second wife and son Bobby lived in Alhambra, California for many years. Son Bobby died at age 17 in a surfing accident.
