Charles was a coal miner in Texas until the need for coal by the railroads stopped with the advent of diesel engines. He was later a farm worker in Texas and in Wyoming, a building supervisor in New York City, and a pipefitter in Tampa, Florida. He was also a musician, playing violin and other string instruments and teaching the art to his children.
