Tony Alva Mendoza, 90, of Tampa died June 21, 2020. Tony was born Dec. 5, 1929, the youngest child of Crescenciano (Charles) Perales Mendoza and Virginia Torres Alva, both immigrants from Mexico. Tony was born in Tampa, Florida and lived several years in New York City. When World War II began the family returned to Ybor City. He went to Jefferson High School and attended The University of Tampa. He served in the Florida National Guard for several years and was a member of the Shriners. Tony was an agent for John Hancock Insurance Company before moving to Tallahassee where he was first employed with the Florida State Department of Insurance as an Examiner. He then went to the Department of General Services where he retired as a Purchasing Analyst in 1996. In his younger years he and several of his brothers and sisters played guitar and sang at local Latin clubs. While he was younger in Tallahassee, he enjoyed riding his bicycle with a buddy and frequently went for long walks and runs. For many years, he was an avid golfer and an active Florida State University sports fan. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Virginia; brothers, Benjamin Alva, Carlos Alva, Charles Alva, Fernando Alva, David Alva, Leopoldo Alva, Daniel Alva, William Alva; Sisters, Emilia Alva, Carlotta Alva, Angelita Alva, and Hortencia Alva; and son David Gene. Tony is survived by his children Maria, Richard and wife Tammy, Christopher and wife Tonya; grandchildren, Wendy, Christina and Gabriella; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Services for Tony will be held privately for the family.
