Gladys received her formal education attending rural school and graduated from the Red Cloud High School in 1927. On October 31, 1927 she was united in marriage with Lue Rudolph Etherton at Mankato, Kansas. They made their home together farming in Webster County, and they moved in Guide Rock to make their home in 1948, where she joined the Baptist Church in 1953. She operated a cafè for a period of time in Guide Rock, and later worked at the Red Cloud nursing home. Her husband, Lue, died on April 25, 1966. In 1966, she married Art Knigge. They lived in Guide Rock until 1969, when they moved to Red Cloud. In 1972, Gladys moved to Harvard, Nebraska, and in 1988, she moved to Lincoln.
In her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting, baking and cooking. She especially cherished and looked forward to time spent with her family.
Preceding her in death were her husbands; a daughter, Dorothy Chapman; a son, James Etherton; grandson, Richard Hoins; two sisters, Marguerite Laird and Bertha Pounds; and three brothers, William, Charles and Ervin Schnieber.
Left to treasure her memory are two sons, Wayne Etherton and wife Marge of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Lue Etherton and wife Bonnie of York, Nebraska; daughter, Joan Hoins and husband Ralph of Superior, Nebraska; 22 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 25 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Caroline Marie Bauer of Lincoln, Nebraska; her sister-in-law, Ruby Schnieber of Lincoln, Nebraska; other relatives and a host of friends.
