Bertha Mae Schneiber Pounds, 93, died Oct. 29, 2001, at Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. She was born Oct. 25, 1908, on a farm southwest of Red Cloud, Neb., near Inavale, Neb., the sixth of seven children of Bruno and Carrie Schneiber.
Bertha received her education at District 69 and Red Cloud High School, graduating in 1927. She attended York College for one year and taught five terms of elementary school in Webster County, Neb.
On Jan. 6, 1935, she married Dean Pounds of Smith Center. They had two daughters, Linda Lee and Barbara Elaine.
Bertha was raised in a Christian home. She was a member of Womer Church until she was married, when she moved to Smith Center and then transferred her membership to the Smith Center United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful member for 66 years.
She was a homemaker, wife, and mother. She was a gifted seamstress who enjoyed sewing and crafts. Bertha was self-taught to do upholstery and drapery work. Many homes in the area continue to show evidence of her talent.
Throughout her life, she was active in her church, participating in the Martha Circle. She was involved in her Home Demonstration Unit for several years. Education was important to her and she established the Dean O. and Bertha M. Pounds Scholarship that is awarded to a Smith Center High school graduate each year. She treasured the notes that she received from the recipients.
Bertha also like to garden and was known around the neighborhood for the cinnamon rolls that she shared with friends. For the last 10 months of her life, she resided at Smith County Long Term Care, where she will be remembered as the cheerful lady who always helped others.
The survivors are her daughters, Linda Arnold and husband Larry of North Potomac, Md., and Barbara Bailey and husband Donald of Olney, Md.; two granddaughters, Kristina Whitaker and husband Joel of Kansas City, Mo., and Augusta Olsen and Noah Wester of Key West, Fla.; great-grandchild Veronica, daughter of Augusta and Noah; two sisters, Carolyn (Marie) Schnieber Bauer and Gladys Schnieber Knigge, and sister-in-law Ruby Lambert Schnieber, all of Lincoln, Neb.; and brother-in-law Roger Pounds and wife Dorothy of McPherson.
The funeral was Nov. 1st at Simmons Mortuary Chapel, Smith Center, officiated by Rev. Ronald R. Bailey and Pastor Dennis Lambert. The vocalists were R. G. Sheppard and Kathy McCary with Phyllis Tucker as accompanist.
The casket bearers were Dee Pounds, Bill Overmiller, Duane Hawkins, Gerald Duntz, Jay Overmiller, and Louis Overmiller. The honorary bearers were Roger Pounds, Myron McDonald, Harry Weaver, Cecil Sealock, and Bob Rethorst. The burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, Ks.
