James Wesley Centers was born the third of eight children to John Centers and Elenor "Elen" Carter. The family moved from Ohio to Missouri some time between 1854 and 1856.

On 1 Feb 1873, James married Sarah Martha Forbes and they had ten children. Sometime between 1900 and 1904 James and Martha moved to Vale, Malheur County, Oregon, but they did not stay long. In April 1904 they moved to Weippe, Shoshone County, Idaho (now Clearwater County.) Many other family members made the move also. Some did not care for Idaho and returned to Livonia.

Tragedy befell the family. On 23 Oct 1904, James' brother-in-law, James Henry Neagle, passed away in Weippe. Widow Hannah was left with seven children to raise, so she opted to return to Missouri; she passed away three months later (26 Jan 1905) and the children were scattered among friends and family. Hers was the fourth death. James' and Martha's son, John L. Centers passed away on 25 Nov 1904 and his wife gave birth to a son on the 27th who died on 29 Nov 1904.

Daughter, Laura Nevada (Vada) Centers Crawford gave birth to a daughter in late 1904, and this baby passed away on 12 Feb 1905 outside of Pierce City, Shoshone County, Idaho.
