Mrs. Lydia Chapin d. April 9, 1845. Luther, the father, is a Carpenter and Turner by trade, having worked at the business for thirty years. He served as first Lieutenant of the Company of Artillery in Buckland, was elected Captain in 1841, served two years, and received an honorable discharge.


The son, Norris E., is learning the Carpenter's trade. Luther, the father, at present resides in Ashfield, Franklin Co., Mass.

Luther Chapin, son of Japhet and Lucy (Ware) Chapin. was born in Buckland, May 24, 1809, and died in Ashfield in 1894. By trade a carpenter and turner, he acted as boss carpenter at the age of eighteen years and was lieutenant of a company of artillery in Buckland, also was elected captain in 1841, serving for two years thereafter, until his honorable discharge. For a time he conducted a grist mill, but later in life followed farming. He served for some years as a member of the Board of Education and attended the Baptist Church. He was considered one of the worthy and notable citizens of his day, an ornament to the community and a man of useful activities.


He married (first) on December 4, 1845, Malvira M. Swan and they were the parents of the following children:

1. Eunice;

2. Luther D.;

3. Lydia D.;

4. Norris E.; and

5. Edward M.


He married (second) and the three children of this marriage are:

1. Mary E.;

2. George H.; and

3. Arthur Japhet

CHAPIN, LUTHER.—Age, 33 years. Enlisted, August 20, 1864, at Antwerp; mustered in as private, Co. E, September 3, 1864, to serve three years; mustered out with company, July 31,1865, at Fort Monroe, Va.
