He had 12 siblings: Levi (1759-1848), Rebecca (1760-?), Abraham (1761-1856), Samuel (1770-1809), Robert (1775-1845), Thomas (1776-1825), Theopilus (1777-1782), Isaac (1783-1858), Levi II (1784-1852), Robert (1786-1856), and Alexander Wright Mitchell (1787-1853).
He married Nancy Jane Campbelll in 1791 in Virginia, when she was 20 years old. They moved to Harrison County, Kentucky where their first child, a son (James Mitchell) was born. To this union, they had 11 children: James Mitchell (1793-1860), Joseph Mitchell (1794-1861), Elizabeth Mitchell (Bails) 1796-1833), Jane Mitchell (1799-1833), Margaret "Peggy" Mitchell (1799-1879), David Mitchell (1804-1876), William C. Mitchell (1807-1885), John Mitchell (1809-1896), George Mitchell (1813-1884), Thomas J. Mitchell (1813-1887) and Nancy Mitchell (Finley) 1816-1900.
The happy family moved to Indiana about 1831 after Nancy's mother's death at the age of 85.
