Charles was the fourth son of eight sons and he had one younger sister, who was the ninth child.


Born in Macon, Georgia, Charles E. Rentz was married to Ella Varner on December 10, 1868 in McLennan County, Texas. Sometime after the 1870 US Census they moved from McLennan County to Jack County, Texas, where they are found in the 1880 US Census. By 1900 they have moved to Johnson County, Texas, and very soon after that Census they moved to Montezuma County, Colorado.


They had eight children, five sons and three daughters.


In the "Local News Notes" of the November 2, 1923 issue of The Dolores Star appeared:


"C. E. Rentz died at the home of his son, Sam, on Montezuma creek about 11 o'clock Wednesday night. The remains will be brought to this place for burial. Heart failure was the cause of death. Obituary next week."


On November 9, 1923 in The Doloros Star appeared:


"Funeral of C. E. Rentz.

The funeral of C. E. Rentz, who passed away at the home of his son, Sam, at Montezuma Creek, Wednesday of last week, was held from the Baptist church Saturday afternoon. Rev. C. L. Flanders had charge of the service. The remains were laid to rest in the Summit cemetery. The church was filled with neighbors and friends who gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed. The following obituary was read: Charles Edward Rentz was born at Macon, Georgia, August 23rd, 1848, 'Died Octber 31, 1923, being 75 years, 12 months and 8 days of age. He moved to Texas in young manhood, where in 1869 he was united in marriage to Sarah Ella Varner, who passed to the Great Beyond six years previous and has been waiting his coming to join her on the other shore. To this union was born eight children five of whom are living, Mrs. D. W. Medford and Mrs. H. A. Thompson of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. J. N. Withers of Dolores, Hugh M. and Sam Rentz of Montezuma Creek, Utah. He also has a brother, S. M. Rentz of Lebanon, Colorado. Deceased has been a member of the Baptist church since youth and lived a consistant christian through life."


Charles Rentz is the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin, 2 times removed, Temperance Alice "Tempie"Lockett Rentz Pyle, 1888-1970. Mike Lockett
