OBITUARY (Custer City, Oklahoma newspaper) Joel Ben Pitts was born April 22, 1875 at Fayetteville, Tenn. at the age of 25 years he moved to Oklahoma and settled on a farm near Custer City, and later he engaged in business here in Custer. In August 1925 he moved to Oklahoma City at which place he resided up to the time of his death. At the age of 18 years he united with the M. E. Church South at Beech Grove, Tenn. He moved his membership to Mt. Hope when he came to Oklahoma and from there to St. Luke's M. E. Church South, in Oklahoma City where he was a member at the time of his death. He was a member of the Masonic order in Custer City, of the Conistory at Guthrie and the Shrine at Oklahoma City. He was united in marriage to Addie Lou Luna, March 4th 1897 at Fayetteville, Tenn. To this union three children were born, Elizabeth Pitts Gossum, Custer City, Joel G. Pitts, and Francis E. Pitts, Oklahoma City. He departed this life at high noon July 16th 1931, at his residence in Oklahoma City. He is survived by his wife, three children, grandson Billie Joe Gossum, Custer, brother Rufe H. Pitts, Oklahoma City, sisters Mrs. W. T. Davis (Daves), Indianapolis, Okla., and Mrs. Sallie Leitner, Weatherford. Funeral services were conducted here at the M. E. Church at 4 p. m. on Friday, conducted by Rev. Carson, and burial was in the Custer cemetery with Masonic honors. Many Masons from the different lodges over the county were present. The family have the deepest sympathy of the whole community in their sorrow and bereavement.
