Wife of Joel G. Pitts - Obituary: "Mrs Mattie C Pitts was born in Lincoln county Tenn., July 24th 1847. Died Dec 8, 1906. Sister Pitts joined the Methodist church in 1859, at the age of twelve. Married Joel B. Pitts in 1868. To them were born five children three girls and two boys, of whom two girls and the two boys are still living and were with her in her last moments. In 1884, more than 22 years ago sister Pitts had her first great sorrow in the death of her husband leaving her with the five children to face the world alone. About ten years ago sister Pitts passed through another great sorrow In the death of her daughter, Mrs Ella Ashby, who passed away Jan 1st 1897. Through all these years of sorrow, trial and loneliness she kept her faith in God and lived in the Savior’s love and service. Through the long painful Illness her faith held fast, “Anchored safe within the vail" (sic) she often said she was ready, willing and not afraid to die. Talking and sometimes singing of the better land where there is no more sorrow pain or death. Her children and other relatives know where to find her in the better country. Funeral service at Mount Hope church Dec. 9th 2 p. m., after which she was laid away in the grave to await the Resurrection Morn. We hope to meet her in the sweet by and by J A Trickey Pastor".
