George E. Braaten, 92, formerly of Austin died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Fieldcrest Health Care Center in Hayfield, Minn.

He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Eagle Bend, Minn. to Tom and Anna (Thompson) Braaten. His family moved to the Corning area when he was about 18 months old. George attended country school in Corning. Life was not easy on the farm, but everyone had a job to do and they did it. As George grew up, life was not all work; he also loved to dance.

George and Edna (Tiegen) courted for a couple of years, then married on Aug. 30, 1940, at the Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa, by Rev. Myhre, the same minister that had married Edna's parents in 1908. George farmed for a couple of years and laid block for 17 years. He then worked as a carpenter until he retired in 1980.

George had several hobbies: hunting, fishing, trap shooting, dancing and making the best pancakes in the world.

After they retired, they made and sold lefse and financed many trips with the proceeds. They always shared and enjoyed these trips with Butch and Helen Fahje. Getting together with family has always been important to them.

George was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Sara Boleyn; brothers, Tillman, Henry, Ole, and Chester; and sisters, Myrtle, Hazel, Alice, Melda, Edna, and Netta.
George is survived by his wife, Edna Braaten of Hayfield, Minn.; daughters, Shirley (Leon) Kruse of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Dorothy Jean Titus of Washington, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice (Sylvester) Thompson of Corning, Minn., Ann Hemenway of Missoula, Mont.; nieces and nephews.

Honorary bearers will be: Myron Cochran, Dave Braaten, Gary Braaten, Wayne Thompson, and Vern Jacobson.

Casket bearers will be John Kruse, Dale Kruse, Larry Kruse, Don Prohaska, Mike Doolan, Travis Kruse, and Mike Braaten.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at noon at the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with Rev. Gene Leiter officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Saturday for one hour before the service. The interment will be in Red Oak Grove Cemetery.
