Born Catherine Marie Magdalene Schack, she was the 3rd of 4 children born to Johann Heinrich Schack and Anna Catharine Marie Martens, in he small farming community of Kollow, which is in the Schleswig-Holstein district of northeast Germany. Her oldest sister, Catharina Maria Elisabeth, was born November 10, 1859 and baptized 8 days later, but nothing else is known about her.
Her next-older sister was Catharine Marie Dorothee, known as "Dora", who came to America before Lena as the wife of Frederick Frank Groth; she settled on the land directly south of the cemetery next to St. John Lutheran Church.
Her youngest sister was Sophie Marie Magdalena.
Their aunt, Sophia Schack, was married to Henry Sahlmann. In 1884 Henry's son, also called Henry, paid for Lena and Sophie to come to America. Sophie married Henry in 1885 and the next year, on December 8, 1886 Lena married William Carl Wiegert, who went by "Bill".
Lena and Bill were the parents of seven children: Clara, Hugo, Ernst, Alvina, Olga, Martin, and Irene. Hugo died at the age of 15 in a "dry drowning" accident; the others all lived to adulthood, married, and had families. Lena died at the early age of 50; besides her surviving children she had only one grandson, Melvin Von Fange (daughter Clara's son). (Nine grandchildren were born after her death.) She was also survived by her husband and her two sisters Dora & Sophie.
