Alvina was the fourth of seven children born to William Carl "Bill" and Magdalena (Schack) Wiegert, on their farm in Elkhorn township, Lincoln County, Kansas. She was raised in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church, south of Lincoln, Kansas. She was baptized there as an infant, confirmed when 14, married there, and was buried in the cemetery next to the church.

There must have "been something" about those Tatkenhorst boys that she went to school with; their farm was about a mile west of hers. On August 10, 1919 she married the older Tatkenhorst boy, John; a year earlier her younger sister Olga had married the younger Tatkenhorst boy, Ben.

Alvina (who was confirmed as "Sophie Helene Alwine Wiegert" and John settled into farming. Their one and only child, a daughter, was born after they had been married for almost 15 years. Alvina and John farmed until 1955 at which point they moved in town (Lincoln, Kansas) and let their daughter, now married, take over the farm.

In early October 1964 she suffered a stroke and was taken to the Lincoln County Hospital. Never recovering consciousness, she died 4 days later. She left her husband, daughter and son-in-law, and two grandchildren to mourn her loss. Her husband died just 10 weeks later.
