Grant's mother must have been at the home of her parents William and Sarah Lamb when he was born because his parents James L. Gilmore and Sarah Lamb lived near Sparta in Christian Co. MO. Grant married Maggie Gilmore 26 Mar 1891 in Christian Co. MO and they were parents of three children Josie, Leslie, and Paul who were born in Sparta, MO. Grant and Maggie moved to Springfield where Grant was working as an ice puller at the ice plant.

Census records verify that Grant was born before 1870. His death certificate and tombstone have the year wrong. Daughter Josie (Josephine Sarah Frances Gilmore) Lambird is buried in the Springfield National Cemetery with husband Reuel Lambird who was a private in WWI.
