James married Mary Richardson 2 Sep 1852 and she died shortly after the birth of son John. James remarried Sarah M. Lamb 25 Jan 1861 in Christian Co. and they moved to the area of Sparta MO. James served in Co. D 14th MO State Militia Cavalry and Co. M 4th MO State Militia Cavalry. His exact date of death is found on his military tombstone order. His brother John W. Gillmore is buried at Kissee Mills Cemetery; his brother William Thomas Davidson Gilmore is buried at Oakland Cemetery, Atkins, Pope Co., AR; and his sister Margaret H. Gilmore is buried in Frazier Cem., Christian Co., MO.
