Hugh went to visit his widowed sister-in-law (wife of his deceased brother, Richard Brown) on "Brown's Island" in the Ohio River. On his way back across the river, his horse threw him and he drowned. His body was recovered and he was interred in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Steubenville.
NOTES: The author of the book above, George Brown, is the son of Hugh Brown. I am assuming the Cross Creek Cemetery is where George is referring to as Hugh's burial place. I know it's also known as the Cross Creek Presbyterian Cemetery. In addition, my Brown family lived on Cross Creek near Steubenville, so it is a logical assumption that this is the same Presbyterian Cemetery George mentions.
