A daughter of the late Grafton "Bud" and Mary Nancy Jenkins Hilliard, she was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in Stanley, Va., and enjoyed her farm life there. She graduated from Stanley High School with honors in 1939.
Mrs. Shuler worked at Shenandoah IGA, was a cafeteria worker in Page County Schools, was a homemaker and was a baby-sitter for many families in Shenandoah. She was a member of First Christian Church in Shenandoah, where she was an elder and served as treasurer of the Christian Women's Fellowship Group. Mrs. Shuler was the oldest living member of the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary.
In 1940, she married Robert C. Shuler, who preceded her in death in 1965. Surviving are three children, Robert Shuler Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Verona, Roger Shuler and wife, Linda, of Elkton, and Sandra Jenkins and husband, Lynn, of Shenandoah; 12 grandchildren, Teresa Bishop, Dwayne, Dwight and Alex Shuler, and Frances Stover, Wanda Green, Lynn (Jr.) and Barbie Jenkins, Patty Hawse, Janet Mayes, Sherri Downey and Scott Curtis; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Ruby Discala of Stanley; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Curtis; three brothers, three sisters; a granddaughter, Debbie Curtis; and great-grandson, Nathan Downey.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Friends may also call at the home of her son, Roger, at any time.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Perry officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dwight, Dwayne and Alex Shuler, Lynn Jenkins Jr., Edward Mayes and Chuck Bishop.
