BRONZE STAR TO INFANTRYMAN FOR GOING THROUGH JAPANESE FIRE
PFC Donald Walker Established Outposts Recieves Infantryman Badge
With the 37th Infantry Division Somewhere in the Southwest Pacific--A Mason City infantryman who moved through heavy Japanese fire to establish observation posts is today the holder of the Bronze Star.
He is PFC Donald C. Walker...who recieved the medal for heroic achievement on Bougainville in the northern Solomon Islands. The citation that accompanied the medal stated that PFC Walker proceeded twice through heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire to set up observation posts and assisted in directing effective fire until the enemy was forced to withdraw.
The 21 year old soldier has been on overseas service since September of 1943 and joined the 37th Infantry on Guadalcanal just prior to the Bougainville operations. Besides the Bronze Star, he holds the Combat Infantry Medal for exemplary conduct in combat.
