Funeral Thursday For Anoka Agent
Funeral Rites for Louis Kocum at Sts. Peter and Paul's Church at Butte

Louis Kocum was born at Sobetice, Bohemia, June 21, 1896, and passed away at the
Lynch hospital Monday, August 5, 1940, at the age of 44 years, one month and 14
days.

At the age of seven he immigrated to the United States with the family and came
directly to Fairfax, S. D. At Fairfax he received his education and while
attending school he worked around the depot without pay and rapidly learned
telegraphy and railroad work. Since November 25, 1914 he had been in continuous
service with the Chicago & Northwestern railway, and on June 5th, 1917, he
became agent at Anoka in which position he continued until his death.

He was ever faithful in his service, very capable and always extended his
service to the public beyond requirements.

During his last illness he received from the Order of Railroad Telegraphers a
Veteran 25-year Service medal. He was very well known among railroad men and
telegraphers all of whom respected his ability and his integrity. His ranking
was very high with the officials and he was rated an expert telegrapher.

His chief hobby was amateur radio and he was one of the pioneer amateur radio
operators in the country, receiving his first license about 15 years ago. He had
assembled one of the most powerful amateur broadcasting sets in this section,
and his signals had been received in all parts of this country and many foreign
countries. His personality was well known on the air — often operators who had
not talked with him for a long time would immediately recognize his voice and
call him by his first name. On many occasions his station was used in sending
emergency messages.

August 21, 1923, he was married to Lucy B. Engelhaupt who has been a true and
faithful companion. During his illness she helped to give him all the care and
comfort possible. Although he suffered greatly for many months, he was patient
and resigned to his affliction, and was appreciative of all kindnesses and
assistance given by friends, associates and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul's church at Butte on Thursday,
August 8th, with Rev. F. J. Werthman officiating assisted by Rev. Robert Duhe of
Fairfax. Burial was in St. Peter and Paul cemetery.

Although this friend and associate has departed from us, the remembrance of
association with him, his life among us, his service to us and his devotion to
duty will long be remembered by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, two brothers, James of Tekamah and Joseph of Fremont,
two sisters, Mrs. Anna Urban of Colome and Mrs. Rose Urban of Tekamah, and many
other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one
sister, Agnes.
