Anna Kocum was born in 1882 in Sobetice, Zapadocesky, Pilsen Region, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, near the town of Klatovy. She immigrated to the United States in 1900 with her cousin, Jim Andrle, and went to Melrose, Wisconsin where some of her aunts and uncles were.

One of her aunts answered a "mail-order bride" ad in her name and put her on a train for Fairfax, South Dakota. She married Joseph Hlousek III on 19 November 1901 in Fairfax, Gregory County, South Dakota. They had two daughters, Carrie Rose and Emma Anna.

Eventually, Anna got her parents and siblings over from Bohemia. With their support, Anna divorced Joseph Hlousek on 15 December 1908. In 1912, she took out a homestead three miles southwest of Colome in Tripp County, South Dakota.

About 1913, she married Francis "Frank" J. Urban. They had a son, Francis "Frankie" J. Urban, Jr.
