Ernest was "one-of-a-kind" and I will forever remember many of his "one-of-a-kind" sayings and/or messages preached and shown by his life. He moved among and was welcomed by giants of his profession as a Minister of the Gospel

Most of the following is about my personal and youthful impressions as his youngest sister. I hope none of you find it offensive.

When Ernest was young and hanging with the youth, he picked out songs on the piano with one or two fingers and Lorene, William's later-to-be wife, called him "Patty" - her short for Paderewski, the famous musician, and that name just sort of stuck!

Ernest served in the U S Navy and was located in Hawaii during the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor bombing. He was an Opticians Mate and at one point while on the Islands, a "big-name high-up" officer broke his glasses and Ernest had the pleasure of grinding the lenses for this gentleman.

After he came home from the Navy, we had "inspection" in the kitchen and I often came up short. He heard me begging a friend to let me ride her bike and offered me a job at $2-3 a week (cleaning house) to buy my own bike. It worked and I got a bike! My hair was curly and he liked it to look natural - like the styles of today. I would try to smooth the top with several "bobby pins" which was a no-no. I was probably 11-13 years old.

More to come . . . .
