Barbara Ellen Schilling (nickname was Zint) was the daughter of Peter and Eva Schilling. Barbara was born on February 4, 1867 in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. When she was 9 months old, her family moved to Chicago where they lived until she was 13 years old. As a child of 4.5 years of age, she saw the great Chicago fire of 1871. The family, which numbered 14 children, moved to Benton County Indiana in 1880, they traveled by train from Chicago to Hoopeston, IL and on to the farm by horse and wagon. On November 4, 1886, at the age of 19, she married to John Nathan Kult. For the first nine years of their marred life they farmed in Talbot, Indiana, three of their eight children were born there. On February 28, 1895 they relocated to Carroll County, Iowa where they purchased 120 acres located in Richland Township, 8 miles north of Coon Rapids. The farm is gone, but the driveway is still visible off the north side of 270th between Apple Avenue and Zephyr.
