John Kult was the son of Joseph & Catherine Kult of Benton County Indiana. He was born in Saint Clair, Pennsylvania (near Pottsville) where he lived until he was 12 years old. In 1870, his family moved to Benton County Indiana where they purchased and tilled 160 acres of farmland. John married Barbara Schilling on November 4, 1886. For the first nine years of their marred life they farmed in Talbot, Indiana, three of their eight children were born there. John worked in Chicago for 2-3 years on the tunnel under the Chicago River then, on February 28, 1895, they relocated to Carroll County, Iowa where they purchased 120 acres located in Richland Township, 8 miles north of Coon Rapids. The farm is gone, but the driveway is still visible off the north side of 270th between Apple Avenue and Zephyr.
