William G. Smith, 79, a lifelong resident of the Caledonia area, died this morning in Highland hospital, Belvidere, following a week's illness.
Born on a farm near Caledonia, Dec. 4, 1870, Mr. Smith had farmed in that neighborhood all his life until becoming ill.
Preceded in death by his wife, Jane, on Aug. 11, 1945, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, John R., who farmed with his father, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Mervyle Peterson, Post drive, Rockford.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from the Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 N. Main street. The Rev. Robert C. Hubbard, pastor of the Willow Creek Presbyterian church at Argyle, will officiate and burial will be in the Scottish cemetery, Argyle.
Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 and 8:30 o'clock Wednesday evening.
