Charles Andrew Dunford Sr., 64, died suddenly at Smyth County Community Hospital on May 19, 2010, after a long battle with heart disease.

He was a lifetime resident of Marion and a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the VFW and the DAV. He retired from Mt. Rogers Community Service Board. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather and was the son of the late Issaac and May Eller Dunford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Dunford; one brother, Paul Dunford; two sisters, Shirley and Margaret Dunford; and one great-granddaughter, Aurora Harris.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia Dunford Harris of the home; one son, retired Major Charles A. Dunford Jr. of Chester; four grandchildren, Robert Harris and wife, April, of Blacksburg, Kelly Dunford of Marion, and Mikayle and Justin Dunford of Chester; one great-grandson, Alexander Harris, and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Harris, both of Blacksburg; two brothers, Jimmy Dunford of Colorado and Johnny Dunford of Chilhowie; three sisters, Betty Sawyers of Pulaski, Lucy Keith of Aurora, Ill., and Bonnie Newman of Wytheville; many nieces and nephews; and many loving and caring friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Teague officiating. Burial will follow in Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com.
