In the summer of 1861, Robert was the second son of his family to volunteer for the CSA, following in the steps of his older brother James. Both of them enrolled in Cobb's Legion Infantry and were later joined by their oldest brother William.
William died on 4 May 1864, probably of disease, and the following month, on 24 June 1864, Robert was killed at the Battle of Samaria Church (also called the Battle of St. Mary's Church) in Charles City, Virginia. Where he was buried in unknown since his name is not among the known Confederate dead in Charles City County.
