William Franklin Lamkin was born in 1830 or 1831, the oldest child of Benjamin H. and Permelia A. (Niblack) Lamkin. He married Serena A. Stanley, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Stanley, on 4 Jan 1859 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and the couple had one daughter, Mary Florence (Lamkin) Pool.

Towards the beginning of the Civil War, in summer 1861, William's two brothers James and Robert volunteered to serve in the CSA. The following spring, on 30 April 1862, William joined them, and all three served in Cobb's Legion Infantry. Unfortunately William became sick and was sent to the camp infirmary in October 1863, and it appears that is where he died the following May. His CSA file does not say which camp infirmary he was in, and so where he was buried is unknown.

Within a few years after the war's end, William's widow married David A. Farr.
