Born in Georgia, Augusta was the daughter of Thomas Dixon by his second wife, widow Martha Patterson (nee Hardie). She appears with her parents and half-brother James on the 1870 census in Pike County, Alabama, enumerated as "Ann F. Dickson." Her name was elsewhere mis-recorded as "Argent" instead of Augusta.

Augusta Floretta Dixon married Robert B. Knowles Jr. in Pike County, Alabama on 03 Aug 1871. Their known children were Minnie L., Davis H., Maxwell Vanes, and Robert Knowles. Her husband survived her, remarrying in 1900.
