Thomas was the 10th of 11 children born to David Joseph and Elizabeth (Douglas) Summerall. The Census records show that this family was of mixed race, being part Indian, part Scottish, and Thomas's grandmother Sarah (Nunez) Summerall was Spanish.
Thomas grew up son of a farmer. The bottom part of Thomas's marriage license shows he Married Julia Cox on Jan. 11, 1883. The upper portion of the License shows Jan. 9th as the day he received the License.
Thomas and Julia had two sons, George Washington Summerall and a son James Wesley. Their son George died on December 23, 1951 and then Thomas died 4 months later on May 9, 1952.
