John Davis Caskey, venerable and esteemed citizen of this city, died at 6 o'clock Friday evening at his home on Chesterfield avenue, after an illness extending over several moths. He was 74 years of age and leaves surviving his wife, Mrs. Lucy Caskey and one son, J. Willie Caskey of Athens, Ga., an only child, who was with him in his last hours. Mr. Caskey was a staunch citizen and will be greatly missed by both white and colored, who held him in highest esteem. He was a veteran of the civil war, serving with the last call for boys, and was in service until the end of the conflict. He was of the A.R.P. faith and was a most consistent member. At the time of his death he was a member of the county pension board and had held many offices of trust and importance in Lancaster county. Funeral services were conducted from the residence at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. W.S. Patterson, his pastor, officiating. Burial was immediately afterward in Westside cemetery. The large assemblage attending the last rites of the deceased was ample evidence of his character and life.
