JOHN P. CARTER DIES SUDDENTLY

Angina Pectoris Causes Death of Resident of Clifty Township

NO AUTOPSY WAS HELD

HE HAD WORKED ABOUT HIS HOME ALL MORNING AND FIRST COMPLAINED ABOUT NOON-END CAME WHEN HE BEGAN TO EAT SUPPER

John P. Carter, a prominent and wealthy farmer, died suddenly about 6:30 o’clock Tuesday evening at his home, twelve miles east of this city. He had been in normal health practically all day but soon after noon he complained slightly. However, he started to eat his supper as usual and drank only a few swallows of tea when he got up from the table suddenly and went into the sitting room and laid down on a couch. His son, Orrin Carter, hurried to him when the father became very sick, and died within two minutes from the time he left the supper table.
The family physician, Dr. James H. Morrison, was sent for as soon as it was seen that Mr. Carter was not well, but death occurred before he was able to arrive. Coroner L. E. Bracken, of this city, was also summoned, and after holding a consultation with Dr. Morrison, concluded from the evidence that death was caused by angina pectoris, which means a form of neuralgia of the heart induced by acute indigestion. No autopsy was held.
The late Mr. Carter had spent the morning about his home and seemed about as well as usual. Some hogs were being butchered and he had taken part in the work. It is said the evidence of a decline in his health was not apparent until soon after noon when he began vomiting. He had eaten his dinner as usual. Mr. Carter had always been favored with good health during his whole life. His age when death overtook him, was 67 years.
The late Mr. Carter was the son of Rev. and Mrs. Albert Carter, both now dead. He was born in Bartholomew county near Hope, and has spent his entire life in this county. All of his time had been spent on the farm and he had gained ownership of several hundred acres of some of the best farm land in Clifty township. He has been a lifelong republican but has never held any public office.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife and by one son Orrin Carter, who is unmarried, and who made his home with his parents. He is survived by no brothers and by one sister, Mrs. James Mahaffey, who lives near the Carter home.
The funeral services will be held at the Sandcreek Baptist church at 10:30 o’clock Friday morning and will be conducted by Rev. J. G. Colter, of this city. Burial will be made in Garland Brook cemetery.
