Maria was the eldest child born to Giuseppe "Joseph" and Concetta (nee Esposito ) DeLuise. Her family owned a hotel in Naples and she wanted to be an opera singer. She came to America with her brother Alfonso on the Montevideo, which left Naples on July 23, 1905 and arrived in NY on August 10, 1905. She was 19 years old at the time and was listed as a laborer, able to read & write on the ship's manifest. She married her husband on July 2, 1910 in Manhattan and had 14 births with only 10 children surviving to adulthood. She worked in the family owned candy store behind the counter. She enjoyed watching the soap opera Guiding Light and told many that it taught her English. Many believed she lived to over 100 years old because she just had to know what would happen next on her soap! She outlived three of her adult children, which was very hard on her, including her unmarried daughter Helen who lived with her. After Helen's death, Maria moved into a nursing home in Middle Village where she died. She is buried with her husband and daughter Helen.
