Amelia and her parents, William Clingaman and Rebecca (Kleckner) Clingaman, and seven brothers and sisters came to Fulton County, Ohio from Seneca County, Ohio in 1853 by oxen-drawn wagon. The area where they settled was later known as German Township, west of Burlington, Ohio. Her father died soon after their arrival so the entire family had to work harder. The land was mostly wooded at that time and there were remnants of Indian tribes nearby.
