John Clingaman was born in Seneca County, Ohio. He moved with his family to German Township, Fulton County, Ohio in 1853. His father died soon after their arrival in Fulton County, so everyone had to work harder. John (Clingaman) Clingman is on the right side of the group picture, standing beside his brother, Daniel. He served in the 10th Ohio Cavalry, Co. D. My Great Grandfather (who was the last living Civil War veteran in Ohio when he died at the age of 104, 4 mos, 23 days). Daniel Clingaman is on the right side They had another brother, Andrew Jackson Clingaman, who also served in the Civil War with Daniel in the 195th, Co. D. They all survived the war.
Sometime after the war, John moved to Gaines Township, Kent County, Michigan. He married Mary Kennedy who had recently arrived from Ireland. They had three children, Elizabeth R. (Jay Lynn), Oscar J. and Arthur.
His hat is a Kepi hat worn by several groups of people including Civil War veterans.
