Martha Isabel Givens was born in Posey County, Indiana, April 6, 1850. In 1853, at the age of 2 years, her family crossed the plains to California, where her father died soon after arrival. In 1857 she returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama and New York City to Illinois. In 1865 she again crossed the plains coming this time to Marion County, Oregon. Here she was married, March 17, 1867, to James C. Hartley. The next year they moved to Washington County, Where she remained till October, 1905, when she came to Columbus, Wash., where she died June 24, 1909.

She was the mother of seven children, six sons and one daughter. Her husband, three sons, J. J. of Hillsboro, Ore., Dr. H.H. of Goldendale, Dr. Clarence of Corvallis, Ore., and the daughter, Miss May, survive her. She is also survived by one brother, Dr. J. W. Givens, of Orifino, Idaho, and two half sisters, Mrs. J. H. Shearer, of Banks, Oregon, and Mrs M. F. Derting of Goldendale. She was buried June 25 at Banks, Oregon. Mrs. Hartley was a model wife, a loving and indulgent mother and a kind neighber, and will be missed by all who knew her.
