Mary Russell of Indiana married Thomas J. Givens on June 4, 1847 at Posey County, Indiana. Two daughters, Martha Isabelle and Rachel Emeline Givens, were born to them there. The Givens family left Indiana for the California gold fields, arriving in about 1852. A son, Thomas Jefferson Givens, was born at Placerville California in 1854. Mary's husband Thomas died soon after; his date of death and location have not yet been found.

Mary married second, widower David Mooneyham, on February 25, 1858 at Franklin County, Illinois. A daughter, Melissa Angeline Mooneyham was born to them in Illinois in 1861. David Mooneyham died sometime after 1861. Mary, with her children Melissa Mooneyham and Martha, Rachel and John Givens moved to Oregon in about 1865.

Mary married third, William Shearer, on November 5, 1866 at Marion County, Oregon. Mary was the second wife of William Shearer and they had one child, Nancy A. Shearer. Mary died at Dilley township (Forest Grove, Oregon) Apr 10, 1879 when daughter Nancy was 8 years old.
