From Holland St. John - "Thomas was born in 1825 and was the son of Thomas J. and Rachel (Jones) Givens, prominent early day settlers in southwestern Indiana. Thomas came from a large family and had eight siblings: Polly, Michael Baker, Maria, Jackson C., Julia, Elizabeth, Martha and Jermiah Cash (my ancestor). On June 4, 1847 Thomas married Mary E. Russell at Mount Vernon. She was born in Illinois. The couple farmed seventy acres in Marrs Township. Mary gave birth to four children: Mary Thomas, Martha Isabel, Rachel Emeline and John Weeks. Mary died as an infant on March 13, 1848 and was buried in Templeton Cemetery. The final Posey County reference to Thomas and Mary was a realty indenture made on March 23, 1853. The timing of the indenture suggests that they joined other members of the Givens family on the long trek to California. Some feel that Thomas may have died while en route. However, one source records in their daughter Martha's biography: "In 1853, at the age of two, her family crossed the plains to California, where her father died soon after arrival." There is no record of his death date or location; however it was most likely in Placerville, El Dorado County, California and around 1854. It was here that his last child was born in 1854. His mother Rachel and brother Jeremiah Cash Givens' wife Ella both died enroute and were buried somewhere in Wyoming Territory. His wife Mary (Russell) Givens, after arriving in Placer County, California, took their children by steamer back east through the Isthmus of Panama, married two more times and finally settled in eastern Washington where she died in 1893."
