"Jim" married Willie Ida Dickens in Johnson Co., GA on July 15, 1894. The marriage record incorrectly lists his last name as "Price." Their daughter, Leslie, was born in 1895 and died in 1940. She married M.C. Grimes. She and "Buddy" lived in Macon, GA, for many years. They had five children: Junior, Dorothy, Catherine, Vivian and Cecil. According to Leslie's death certificate, Jim was born in Mitchell, Glascock Co., GA.
He served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War era, enlisting on May 9, 1899 at Ft. McPherson, GA. His military record contains the following information: born in Glascock Co., GA, brown eyes, light brown hair, ruddy complexion, 5' 9 3/4" tall, farmer. He was assigned to the 5th Infantry Regiment, Cos. D and F. According to the US Census, dated June 1, 1900, he was a private stationed with the 5th Infantry Regiment, Co. M. at Ft. Sheridan, IL. The census listed his home as being Gibson, GA. It is said that while stationed in Cuba, he contracted yellow fever and was later hospitalized in New York (unverified information). He was discharged Mar. 26, 1901.
On April 4, 1904, he married Martha Ann Sophronia Wood near Gibson, Glascock Co., GA. The marriage took place at Mill Creek Baptist Church and was performed by Rev. A. S. Avant standing next to their buggy. They divorced in November 1947 in Burke Co., GA.
The Pools were living in the Panhandle section of Warren Co. in 1910. He was a farmer.
In 1916, he purchased 26 acres of land from his father. The property is on or near Noah Station Rd. in Matthews, Jefferson Co., GA.
For many years, his third wife's name was forgotten. She was only referred to as "that heifer from Florida." They met through a "lonely hearts" ad in a magazine. Her name was actually Anna Ferris Wills. According to Jefferson County, GA records, that marriage was short-lived as they married in May 1949 and lived together approximately one week. She had given him a shirt as a gift, but took the shirt with her when she left. A divorced was granted in May 1950.
"Miss Claudia" was his fourth wife. It appears that they married sometime after the 1950 census. They remained married until death. It is said that she called him "Mr. Pool."
Family sometimes referred to him as "Papa or Pa Jim."
He owned and operated Springdale Farm in Matthews. Jim had many letters to the editor published in the Augusta Chronicle during the 1930s - 1950s.
