Radford Rayment lost his life in the wreck of the S.S."Berlin" off the Hook of Holland (Hoek van Holland) 21st February 1907 aged 42 years. He is remembered on the Rayment/Stockwell grave at Harwich in Essex. In the East Anglian Daily Times 22 February 1907 he is on the Casualty List as N RAYMENT, A.B., Golden Lion Lane, Harwich, married. Over a hundred people died and many of the crew lived in Harwich.
He was born about 1865 in Cambridge-at the time of the 1891 Census, he was living in Harwich with his wife, 18 year old Rose Alice Rayment, nee Bennett and in 1901 he was listed as a seaman ‘Vessels', Parkeston Buoys, Essex. He is remembered on the family grave at Harwich Cemetery. His son, Radford John Rayment was the first interred. Rose remarried in Woolwich, S.E. London but sadly she and her husband, Herbert Francis Stockwell, and three other members of her family, fell victim to enemy action in 1941 and all five were interred with her son at Harwich.
