WHITE

Cora Florence Baker, daughter of Doras Russell and Ellen (Martin) Baker, was born Jan. 16, 1888, during a blinding blizzard in a sod house near Imperial, Neb., where her parents were homesteading. At the age of six years, along with her parents, three brothers; Walter, Ralph and Halleck, and sister, Ethel, moved to Iowa settling near Newbern, in Lucas County.

Cora accepted Christ at an early age uniting with the Methodist Church in Newbern, where her membership remained even though the Church disbanded several years ago. Her family felt that her strong faith in the Lord was a factor which sustained her during her 104 years.

Cora was united in marriage to Guy Chalmer White. They made their early home in Oakland, Calif., returning to Iowa in 1918, where they engaged in farming until 1930, when they moved to Chariton. It was there they raised their three children, Iola Nadine, Gladys Ellen and Guy Junior.

In 1944, her husband Guy, suffered a massive stroke which led Cora to establish a nursing home, enabling her to care for her husband at home and to provide a living for the family. Guy passed away in 1955, and Cora continued operating the Nursing Home providing tender, loving care to many disabled and elderly patients until 1967, when complications from a broken hip forced her to give it up.

In October 1985, severe health problems forced her to enter Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, where she made her home until her death. However, she continued to maintain the hope and desire to return to her home in Chariton until the very end.

Cora was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; brothers Walter, Ralph and Halleck Baker; sister, Ethel Hunnerdosse; daughter, Nadine Hatfield; grandson, Guy Harold White; and great-grandchilren, Robert Claire Kretchmar and baby, Nadine Hatfield.

Surviving are a daughter, Gladys Street and husband, Roland K., of Humeston; a son, Guy Junior White and wife, Marlene, of Chariton; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Earnest Hunnerdosse, who is now 100 years of age; and many nieces and nephews are also mourning the loss of a loved one.

Cora White was a quiet, gentle person who devoted her life to caring for others. She dearly loved her children and adored the grandchildren and great-grandchildren they gave her. Her joy and pride in them never wavered.

A real highlight in Cora's life was in 1988 when on her 100th birthday she was honored at a reception at Westview Acres where she was presented a Governor's Citation for having reached the Century mark. An open house at the Care Center was attended by over 130 family members and friends who cherished her friendship.

Cora passed away March 2, 1992, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, at the age of 104.
