Son of Henry Hodges and Malsey Kennedy Hodges. Brantley had 3 brothers and two sisters.

He was united with the Missionary Baptist Church in the fall of 1856 in Henry County, Alabama.

In 1855, Brantley married Mary Ann Harold a native of Dooly County, Georgia. After 18 months of marriage Mary died.

Married Martha Ann Fulford in Macon County Georgia in 1860. They had 4 daughters; Mary Jane, Martha Ann Fernetta, Theresa Alabama, Carrie May. 6 sons, Henry S., Andrew Jackson, Charles, William Allan, Joseph Floyd, and David K.

He inlisted with the Confedrate State Army in 1862, jioning the Tenth Georgia Battalion. He was transferred to Wade Hampton's cavalry, remaining in this till he surrendered at Augusta, Georgia, in April 1865.

Returning home to Henry County, Alabama, he soon went to Jackson County, Flordia, remaining two years. Then he came back home to Henry County, Alabama.

In 1874 the family emigrated to Hot Spring County, Arkansas, settling on Bayou Creek. About twelve miles southwest of Malvern. They remained there six years. Then Brantley purchased 120 acres near Antioch, Hot Spring, Arkansas.
