He started out his working life as a stock dealer from his father's farm. After he married Flora, he worked as a farmer and grocer in Auburn, then as an owner of a printing shop in Springfield.
They had three children in Illinois: Mae E., Harold Lewis and Robert W. Dodd.
About 1915, Jesse, Flora, their daughter Mae and their son Robert left Sangamon County, Illinois for Spokane, Washington. His wife, Flora died there in 1918 and Jesse lived with his daughter Mae and her husband Dr. John Glenn Harbison on the South Hill. Harold may have come with them, but disappeared around that time. Later, it was learned that his sister knew where he was the whole time.
On August 4, 1921, he married Inez Oldham, daughter of W. O. and Mary Oldham of Kentucky. Inez was born in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Jess and Inez had no children. They settled on the lower South Hill, not far from Jess' daughter, Mae and her family.
He spent the rest of his working years in Spokane, working as a real estate salesman. He had other relatives in Spokane, who lived on the far north side (The Millers-Oscar and Olive Miller and their children) and was well loved among the family, all calling him "Uncle Jess".
