When he was young, his family moved from Knox County to Jefferson County, Tennessee.

On February 24, 1831, he married Mary Templeton "Polly" Jones in McMinn County, Tennessee. Shortly after they moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee, where their daughters Catherine and Nancy Blakely were born. About 1835, they moved to Bradley County to farm there, where they had seven more children; Joshua Jones, James Ellis, William Henry, Mary Anne, Amelia, Sarah A. and Charles Melvin Dodd.

In 1851, he left Bradley County, Tennessee and brought his family to a farm east of Loami. His brothers and their families came with him along with his step brother, Hiram Fry Dodd, who had been living with them. The group travelled to Illinois by wagon train.

A year later, he sold the land they came to in Loami Township and bought a two hundred acres farm in southeast Loami Township. He improved that farm to such an extent that the taxes on it increased near twenty times the amount it was when he bought it.

They had two more children, once settled in Loami Township: Jesse W., who survived to adulthood, married and had children and Alexandra Dodd, who was born in 1858 and died February 17, 1862.

He was a Democrat, had no religious affiliation and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 354 in Auburn.
