John Nicholas Vogt who was known as Nicholas was born in Lorraine, France. According to family stories he came to the United States around 1871 to Lockport, New York. He moved on to Lockport, Illinois where he worked delivering milk by boat to Chicago. He returned to Prussia, which was then in power ruling his previously French homeland. He brought his bride Katherine Deller back from there. They lived in Lockport, Illinois until leaving for Wibaux, Montana in 1909 where they farmed.
