"UNCLE SAM" BARNES DEAD
Samuel Barnes, old and respected resident of this part of the state since 1858, perhaps the oldest settler in Nemaha county, passed away at his home northeast of Goff Wednesday morning of this week at 8:30. Mr. Barnes had been in poor health for several months, and submitted to an operation in the fall on a limb in the hope of improving. He never fully recovered and his advanced years brought a long useful life to a close.

He was married to Mary H. Jinks on July 4, 1873. Four children were born to them, Mrs. Etta Bolden, deceased; Mrs. Carrie Bryant and Mrs. Birdie Fund of this community and George, deceased. For many years the wife has been an invalid and has had loving, sacrificing, devoted care of the husband.

Funeral services were held from the home Friday afternoon at two o'clock. The Wetmore Masonic lodge, with the Goff and Corning lodges assisting, was in charge of the final ceremony. Rev. H. C. Wassell of Wetmore gave the funeral sermon. Interment was in the Barnes cemetery nearby.

Mr. Barnes was devoted to Masonic principles and had been a Mason since 1870.
