John W. Rawlings (Sr.) (abt 1836-1864), age 20, married Margaret "Mag" (Ellis/Rawlings/Sherrill) Cline (1837-1911), age 18, on 3 January 1856 in Harrison County, Indiana. The couple had five children; their last child, John W. Rawlings (Jr.) (1863-1942) was born a month after

A sixth child, Loretta Rawlings (1869-?), carried the Rawlings name, but she was conceived several years after John died.

John served in the Union Army, and left for the Civil War in about 1863. He died in 1864, leaving Margaret, age 27, with five children ranging in age from infancy to age 11.

Margaret remarried in 1874, age 37, to the father of her oldest daughter's husband, Isaac N. Sherrill (1812-1882). The couple continued to live in Indiana. After her second husband died in 1882, Margaret and some of her children joined the family of her oldest daughter, Nancy (Rawlings) Shirrell (1853-1898), in Cherry Township, rural Cherryvale, Montgomery County, Kansas.

In 1893, Margaret, age 56, married her third husband, Absolom Cline (1824-1899), in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri, where she lived out the rest of her life. She was widowed in 1896, and died in 1911, and was buried in an unmarked grave.
