Elizabeth' s first husband, Levastian Coleman, served in the Civil War as a private in Company F, 59th Indiana Regiment, enlisting on December 2, 1862. His Civil War service file describes him as 5'9 1/2" tall, 130 lbs., light complexion. He was wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg (May 22, 1863) when a musket ball hit his right hand carrying away most of his index finger which was afterward amputated. The injury caused his remaining three fingers to "stiffen" and therefore, rendered useless. He was discharged from the Army in November 1864 due to his disability, and later awarded a pension of $8 per month.

Elizabeth & Levastian moved to Montgomery Co., Kansas about 1874 and Levastian died a couple of years later. From his Civil War service papers, an inquiry was made in 1939 by his daughter-in-law, Anna Coleman (by then, she was Anna Rogers, so her husband must have died before 1939), as to whether Levastian's heirs were entitled to any pension which might have been payable to a minor child at the time. Apparently Anna's husband, Albert, was about 3 years old when his father died (about 1876), and as far as they knew his widow, Elizabeth, never filed for a pension for herself or her children. According to this record, Levastian's discharge papers were given to Anna by Elizabeth.

Elizabeth remarried a widower named John Ringle and they lived near Morehead, Kansas. One of her daughters, Emma, married John Ringle's son William. After Emma died, her daughters went to live with Elizabeth & John Ringle. Per the 1900 census, only three of Elizabeth's seven children were living at that time. Elizabeth is buried at Morehead Cemetery with her second husband. Her stone reads "E.J. Ringle 1832-1901".
