Stephen Rawlings, the husband of Mary Whitman, was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on June 1, 1810. He was a farmer in Whiskey Run Township in Crawford County, Indiana and lived there continuously after about 1837. A glimpse of his personality is given in a letter by his daughter-in-law (and niece), Margaret Ellis Cline, who describes her own daughter, Fannie, as being difficult and hard to get along with, like her grandfather. Stephen Rawlings died on February 17, 1877 and is buried along with his wife in the Rawlings Graveyard in Washington County, Indiana.
