John a son of Amory Gale Oliver and Lucretia (Vance) of Burnet and Lampasas, TX. In 1861 John was 2yrs old when his family travelled west from Wisconsin in a covered wagon and ox team, along with 30-40 other families, arriving in Petaluma, CA where his father purchased land and raised cattle and fruit. John received his early education there.
In April of 1876 his father explored Burnet Cty., TX for better ranching prospects, and purchased land on Pool Branch near Strickling. When the new homestead was complete in early 1877 John travelled by train and coach with his mother and other siblings to join up with Amory in Burnet.
He assisted his father with the ranch where they raised sheep, cattle and fine horses. He went on to build his own ranch on part of his parents property, and was locally known as an expert horseman "who could ride any bronc". John became director of the Burnet County Fair and was instrumental in introducing better grades of cattle stock to the county.
In 1890 in Burnet John married Carrie (Faires); the Faires were neighbors of the Olivers in Burnet. Their children were all born and raised at their ranch in Burnet: William Kyle Oliver, Maurice Gerald Oliver, Fae Elizabeth Oliver, Charles Amory Oliver, and Lila Mae Oliver.
